What We Do / Change
Changing Course and Managing Crisis
Creating a more effective, efficient organization often generates new opportunities to better serve your constituencies. We help clients by identifying issues, resolving conflicts, and navigating transitions.
Change is difficult under the best of circumstances. When crisis precipitates change, board members, staff, and other stakeholders often endure extraordinarily challenging transitions. We’ve supported clients through difficult situations, anticipating pitfalls and managing risk throughout the process. We also routinely work with clients to improve organizational effectiveness and efficiency. BWB Solutions provides experienced staff members who can:
- Assess organizational management, operations, finance, and governance systems
- Define roles and responsibilities
- Diagnose and address board / staff relationship challenges
- Develop new structures and systems to match organizational goals
Some recent projects include:
Charting a new course for a social service agency
BWB Solutions was recruited by Board members of a social service agency to address their concerns with the Executive Director’s performance. We interviewed key staff and board members individually, as well as a range of external stakeholders. BWB partners identified major issues with organizational performance, communication, culture and a lack of appropriate human resources systems and procedures. We helped the Board and Executive Director to see that the relationship between the staff and the Executive Director was “broken”, and that she was no longer able to run the organization effectively. Our staff worked with the Board and the Executive Director to come to a mutual agreement on transition that acknowledged both the need for change and also the value that the Executive Director had brought to the organization. As part of the transition, the Board hired an interim director to upgrade policies and procedures and to change the organizational culture while a national search was conducted for the next Executive Director.
Investigating and addressing professional conduct issues
A charter school board’s executive committee had reason to believe a school administrator had exceeded his authority and had possibly engaged in criminal activity. The school's attorney contacted BWB Solutions. We investigated allegations of fiduciary misconduct, false documentation of attendance and student performance records, as well as personnel issues. Through a careful review of policies, procedures, and internal documents, and after a series of interviews, we documented the facts and presented our findings to the Board. We then helped the Board determine options and decide on appropriate actions.
